The villa bedroom

I’ve always loved hearing the sound of waves rolling in while I fall asleep. When I think back on my trip to Bali I’ll remember the moment when I was the most content. I was sipping warm herbal tea in bed in my private villa. The staff had delivered decadent little desserts with hot tea during turn down service. I’d spent the day in the yard of the villa, swimming, reading and tanning under the Balinese sun.

That evening, the tropical rain started to drop so we retreated to the beautiful king size bed with hanging whimsy mosquito netting. I laid down, curled up in the lush bedding and listened. I simultaneously heard raindrops smacking our villa’s plunge pool, strong waves crashing to the shore and Balinese frogs croaking. I was happy.

Australians have long flocked to Bali as it’s a relatively short flight. It’s a more exotic destination for Americans and is a perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic vacation when you really want to get away. The Jimbaran Puri Bali is on the southwestern edge of Bali, on the famous Jimbaran Bay. It’s only a 10 min drive from the Ngurah Rai International Airport which makes transportation easy.

I was excited to visit the Jimbaran Puri because it’s an Orient Express hotel and I’ve always had first class experiences when staying with the hospitality group. In the past I’ve visited the La Residence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos, and the Ubud Hanging Gardens also in Bali. The suburb experience I’d had at both of these properties set the bar very high for the Jimbaran Puri.

When you arrive to the property the initial view is just breathtaking. From a seat in the open-air lobby you see the white sand and the inviting ocean crashing on the hotel’s beach. Between you and the sea is an expanse of the largest swimming pool I’ve ever seen.

As you are ushered to your private villa you have the opportunity to take in the property. Tall walls separate each space allowing secluded privacy. The accomodations are spectacular. The villas feature dark, cherrywood teak floors which are traditional for the region. The bathrooms are black stone and have a sunken tub perfect for relaxation or romance. Plus, there is a modern indoor/outdoor shower. Want to see the layout of where we stayed? Click here for their floorplan. How cool is that?

The most stunning moment on the island was at dusk along the Jimbaran beach. The sky was illuminated with multiple blues, pinks, purples and golds.

Our favorite experience of our trip was an evening dinner and performance on the beach. The entertainment featured traditional singers, dancers and fire performers. The meal was a buffet which showcased local favorites prepared by a very well trained culinary team. My favorite was all the fresh seafood. We had fish, prawns, calamari, crab, shrimp and other treats from the ocean. Some dishes were prepared for you fresh on the beach.

The Balinese have a wonderfully fun tradition of launching paper lanterns into the sky to celebrate milestones or for festivals. We assembled the lanterns and then inserted a special tea light. Once the candle was lit and warm air filled the lantern, it took to the sky. It was a beautiful experience to stand on the beach and watch as the dark sky started to glow with floating paper lanterns.
